What is EGO?

Updated: Apr 7, 2025

When you play a game or sport and win, you feel happy or proud of yourself since all your hard work paid off for that moment of victory. On the other hand, if you lose, you’ll feel down or even disappointed in yourself. But when you’re playing at the moment, the mindset that you have during the game will impact how you play. This mindset is called ego.

Ego can be interpreted many different ways. But what is ego? Ego is a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance. When you win, you feel like you’re on top of the world and your self-importance is going to increase, giving you a bigger ego. When you lose, you’ll feel like all your hard work was for nothing, diminishing your ego. Having too much ego can make you act all cocky, on the other hand, having little ego can make you less confident and have a lower performance level. By winning or losing, ego can affect our mental health. By having fun in the moment, you can enjoy the game and even if you lose, you won’t feel as bad and you can take the loss as an opportunity to grow.

Ego not only affects yourself, but others around you as well. If you have a negative mindset, you might play more for yourself and focus less on teamwork. Your team/partner will see this and they might start making plays without you. You’ll then realize this and your mentality will worsen. By maintaining good composure and communication while playing together with your team, you and your team can play effectively at 100%.

In conclusion, our ego can affect ourselves and others, and we can maintain a good ego by staying calm, having fun and good communication. By doing this, you will feel better about yourself whether you win or lose, and you will boost you and your team’s confidence and morale.
