What is depression

Depression is more than just feeling sad. It's a serious mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions. It can silently impact every area of life, from relationships to work, and even basic self-care. One of the most painful aspects of depression is emotional numbness. People often describe this numbness as feeling empty or disconnected from the world around them. Things they once enjoyed such as hobbies, social gatherings, and even food no longer bring them happiness. This lack of interest can make daily life feel meaningless. Depression also distorts thinking. It convinces people they're worthless, unlovable, or a burden to others. These thoughts are incredibly hard to fight, especially when energy and motivation are lowest. Even getting out of bed or taking a shower can feel like climbing a mountain.

Physically, depression can bring fatigue, sleep problems, appetite changes, and even aches and pains. Depression is not just emotional, it affects the whole body. Many people with depression hide it well, smiling on the outside while struggling internally. That’s why it’s important to check in on loved ones, even those who seem “fine.”
