Whether you have an upcoming test you need to study for, a research paper due or just want to have a better understanding of a subject you're currently struggling with, these are 10 helpful tips that will help you dominate any subject you’re studying.
1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
You know exactly what you are going to accomplish even before you open a book or computer. Instead of "I'll study biology," say "I'll go over the cell structures and do five homework questions." Settling on specific goals provides study time with direction and meaning, so you do not spend time getting bogged down or frustrated.
2. Make a Study Plan and Stick to It
A schedule holds you responsible. Divide your subjects into manageable portions and assign study hours daily, as you would for a class or exercise. Habits are created by routine and prevent last-minute cramming that results in stress and forgetfulness.
3. Use Active Recall
One of the strongest methods of memorizing information is to recall it from memory. Don't just read through notes—close your book and test yourself. Write down everything you can remember about a topic, then review what you got wrong.
4. Review with Spaced Repetition
Cramming doesn’t work. Studying for tests or exams takes time. Maintaining good habits and spacing out your study sessions allows your brain to process the information you are learning much better than if you were to do all your studying the night before a test.
5. Find a Perfect Study Spot
Everyone focuses differently. Maybe you need absolute silence, or maybe some background music helps. Choose a place that keeps you focused and distraction free. Someplace clean, comfortable, and out of reach from your phone if you can help it.
6. Use the Pomodoro Technique
Studying for hours can exhaust you. Study 25 minutes and take a break for 5 minutes. Repeat it until you reach a total study time of an hour, then take a long break. It keeps the mind fresh and alert, as well as prevents burnout.
