The Impact of Screen Time on Mental Health

In today’s digital world, screens are an essential part of everyday life—whether it’s for work, entertainment, or social interaction. However, excessive screen time can have significant negative effects on mental health. Studies have shown that prolonged use of screens, especially on social media, can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. The constant comparison to others, exposure to unrealistic standards, and the pressure to stay connected can take a toll on self-esteem and emotional well-being.



Another major concern is how screen time affects sleep, which is directly linked to mental health. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. This disruption can lead to insomnia or poor sleep quality, which in turn increases the risk of mood disorders such as depression and irritability. Lack of proper rest affects how the brain processes emotions, making it harder to manage stress and maintain a positive outlook.



Furthermore, too much time on screens often reduces face-to-face interactions and physical activity—two critical components of mental wellness. Social isolation and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to feelings of disconnection and low energy.
