Strategies to overcome negative self talk

Here are some things that can help combat negative self-talk:

1.The first step is identification and challenging the inner critic.

Be mindful of negative thought patterns throughout the day. When you catch yourself thinking self-critically, ask yourself Is the thought based on fact, or just an assumption? Would this thought be recognized and acknowledged in another person, like a friend? What would a balanced or more compassionate stance be?

2.The second thing is simply practice self-compassionate behavior. Kind words, kindness, and understanding should be accorded. Everyone has his or her share of mistakes and life disasters such experiences don't define his or her self worth. Exchange those harsh judgments about yourself with affirmations that say "I am learning and growing," or, "I am worthy of kindness."

3.Third, there is the reframing of negative thoughts. Say "I always fail," instead of "I always learn from this experience." The shift in perception can have a huge impact on your way of thinking.

4.Fourth, surround yourself with positivity. They'll want to surround themselves with uplifting books, podcasts, and positive relationships that have the potential to break and rebuild themselves into people of growth and endurance, therefore they tend to be quite supportive.

Getting past that negative self-talk is not ignoring what is wrong, but rather approaching problems from a constructive perspective. If you become really good at it, inside you will hear words of encouragement rather than self doubt. The way you speak to yourself ultimately creates your reality, so choose words that build you up and empower you, not tear you down. Start today to replace one negative thought with a positive one. In time, that little shift could create huge personal growth and a healthier, happier mindset
