Screen time has become a major part of modern life, with people spending hours each day on phones, computers, and TVs. While it's often criticized, screen time can be good too .It can affect mental health in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, screens can provide valuable opportunities for connection, learning, and relaxation. Video calls help people stay in touch with friends and family, online communities can offer support for mental health struggles, and apps or videos focused on mindfulness and fitness can encourage healthier habits. Educational content and creative platforms also stimulate the brain and can boost mood and confidence. However, too much screen time, especially when it replaces physical activity, sleep, or face-to-face interaction can have a negative effect on a person. Excessive scrolling, particularly on social media, is linked to increased anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, often due to comparison or information overload. Blue light from screens can disrupt sleep patterns, while constant notifications and multitasking can reduce focus and increase stress.
The key to a healthy relationship with screen time is balance. Using technology mindfully with setting boundaries, choosing positive content, and taking regular breaks can help people enjoy the benefits of screens without letting them harm mental well-being. Like many things in life, it’s not just how much screen time you have, but how you use it that matters most.
