Sleeping is very important as it helps us become more energized for the next day. Not having enough sleep however, can drain your energy and your mental health. Not only that, but having a lack of sleep can also damage your physical health such as a weakened immune system and a change of behavior. Your body should get at least 9 hours of sleep. Any less than that can cause you to wake up in the morning feeling cranky and tired. Although these are examples of the short term effects of sleep deprivation, the long-term effects can be more severe.
These long-term effects can centre around the nervous system. Having chronic lack of sleep can leave your brain exhausted and in turn give you short-term memory loss and difficulty concentrating on learning new things. Lack of sleep can also negatively affect your mental abilities and can cause mood swings. It can also deprive you of creative thinking abilities. Another part of your body that affects lack of sleep is the immune system. With lack of sleep, your immune system becomes weak and prone to bacteria and viruses since when you’re sleeping, the immune system produces protective substances that prevent infections and viruses affecting your body.
The simplest way to treat sleep deprivation is having at least a 9 hour nap. This can be done in a number of different ways. For example, spending an hour away from electronics can help you fall asleep. Taking the time to prepare for your nightly routine can also help you sleep better. Another way is the 10 minute rule. The 10 minute rule is to make a 10 minute timer and then pretend that you’re asleep on your bed. If you’re unable to sleep after the timer goes off, then you can leave your bed guilt free. This works to help people sleep more guaranteed. Lastly, listening to calming music or documentaries on YouTube can help you sleep better as it’s one of the best ways to fall asleep. Overall, having a lack of sleep is not beneficial for your body and mental health as it can negatively impact you long and short-term.
